Marriage & Family Agreements

Abstinence

Family Night 2008

County Marriage & Family Coalitions, comprised of faith and community
leaders, are joining together to promote lasting marriages and to encourage
healthy families in our county and across Wyoming. They are deeply troubled
by our country's epidemic of marital instability and divorce and feel it
must be directly addressed by faith and community leaders. Each of us is in
a unique position to dramatically affect these issues, touching the lives of
those interested in marriage, engaged or already married couples and
families. Their purpose is to enrich marriages and to significantly reduce
the divorce rate in their County and across Wyoming.

What is a Marriage and Family Agreement? A Marriage and Family Agreement
is a set of agreed upon guidelines or principals for pre-marital preparation and
community support for marriage.  The purpose of the Marriage and Family Agreement
is to help couples develop the skills necessary to have healthy, life-long marriages and
to increase the likelihood that parents will stay together.  Marriage and Family Agreements
are not designed to condemn single parent families nor do they advocate for staying in an
abusive relationship.  What they can do is help couples prepare for the ups and downs
that every marriage goes through and better equip those couples to deal with them.
Each Marriage and Family Agreement  is unique to its own community.

  • Laramie County (Cheyenne) is currently leading the state in the development and implementation of a Marriage and Family Agreement.  It was fully executed and signed by 40 pastors in November 2005.  Laramie County clergy are now working to provide ongoing maintenance and expand participation.

  • Washakie, Albany, Natrona and Park have also executed Marriage and Family Agreements.
  • Campbell and Sweetwater Counties each have an interest in forming a Marriage and Family Agreement committee and initial planning meetings have been held.

FIWY has used training, technical assistance, demonstration projects, and community marriage policies to build a road map for successful expansion of the Marriage and Family Initiative statewide.
